Proven wanted to know what people thought about applying to jobs through Craigslist, so we asked around. Have you ever applied to a job through Craigslist. If so, were there any difficulties/challenges?

The response was unanimously negative.

“…I hate clicking on the reply bottom because it goes straight to my Outlook and from there I don’t know how to use it,” said a middle-aged, working class man on the Bart (Bay Area Rapid Transit). We also approached a young couple, a high school student, and a college student. Simply put, they all hated Craigslist, claiming the popular classifieds website was poorly designed, unorganized, time-consuming, and just …creepy.

On the bus, we spoke to a 40 year-old mother of two, a high school student, and a freelance designer. The mother did not understand how to navigate through Craigslist, so she instead decided to use friends and family to find her current job at the post office.

…Finding a job is so difficult because there are thousands of them but none tailored to me or descriptive enough for me to know that I could apply. So, I usually ‘cold apply’ to hundreds of jobs and wait to hear back.

The designer, most naturally, disliked the website’s design and filtering process and had a hard time finding jobs that did not undercut his skills.

At the 10 local businesses we visited, everyone faced a challenge in the response time. Respondents explained that they needed a job so desperately to pay their bills that they decided to go in person to the job listing’s office. Unfortunately, this was a waste of time because the hirer had usually hired someone a week prior but had forgotten to take the listing down. The biggest problem in using Craigslist for applying to jobs was finding one that paid well. As one person explained, “Craigslist is cluttered with random listings that don’t align with my skills.”

Clearly, there are challenges that users face when applying to jobs on Craigslist. The website lacks an easy-to-use, intuitive interface. It lacks consistent and descriptive content about job listings. It lacks transparency, and some listings are outdated. What we’ve learned is that change, or a better tool to find a job on Craigslist, is necessary.

That’s why we created Proven.com and the official Proven Job Search app. Applying to jobs on Craigslist has never been this easy. We believe in working smarter, not harder. Come learn about our app, so you can simplify your job search and get back to enjoying life.
