We are accepting applications for a full-time Cheese Department Manager position at our Fillmore Store location in Cow Hollow. This position will also work at the Polk Store location in Russian Hill.
Department Managers are responsible for all departmental aspects of managing a team, as well as ordering, receiving, merchandising, stocking and maintenance. Department Managers must comprehend and commit to store objectives, meeting financial goals for sales, margin, and payroll, giving strong emphasis to customer service, and adding personal creative expression to display, merchandising, and product management. Department Managers must have an in depth knowledge of their particular area as well a general sense of Natural Food trends and product lines. They must be able to share their passion for the Industry to both staff and customers. Department Managers must be active participants in change as the Company and Natural Foods Industry grow and develop. The Cheese Department Manager position is essential to the positive growth and development of the Company. This position will also be responsible for maintaining the highest food handling standards, including storage, staff supervision, monitoring shelf life, and control of perishables. Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others are essential qualities for this position, as the Cheese Department Manager must work in concerted effort to implement uniform standards for product, staff, sales, and margin.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Department Merchandising and Customer Service
• Actively participate in and develop Customer Service programs, Special Order & Special Service Programs.
• Administer sampling, demo and in-store promotion programs
• Knowledgeable development of and participation in all Real Food Company merchandising and purchasing programs
• Design and maintenance of shelf sets, resets
• Self tagging and retagging, signage including sales, coupons, shelf talkers
• Fixture Arrangement including racks, displays, case stacks and end caps
• Utilize brokers and reps. to support all programs.
Margin and Inventory Management
• Create and place orders that maintain fully-stocked and well-presented displays while minimizing shrink.
• Monitor and track inventory, out-of-stocks and shrink
• Receive product and takes steps necessary to ensure correct billing including vendors’ generation of credits
• Maintain record keeping necessary to report shrink to accounting
• Develop and maintain system of organization for back stock which minimizes shrink and facilitates use.
• Set prices to meet target margins and achieve sales growth, working with management or vendors as needed
• Understand and utilize sales and purchasing data for effective category management
• Work co-operatively with Store and other Dept Managers to solve problems and meet goals.
Team Management
• Supervise and direct the activities of staff on a daily basis
• Monitor and correct quality of work as needed
• Use positive communication with employees to train regarding customer service, product awareness, presentation, quality assurance, food handling, maintenance, health and safety.
• Function as part of management team with supervisory authority for all employees and all areas of store.
• Assist in reviews
• Assist in any necessary disciplinary processes
Safety and Department Maintenance
• Stock and face
• Maintain a clean and well ordered department, including any fixtures and equipment
• Perform health and safety inspections and hazard evaluations
• Train and monitor in food safety and handling
• Train and monitor for safe use of any necessary equipment.
• Develop and maintain safe Food Storage standards, be knowledgeable and compliant with all DPH guidelines
• Communicate effectively with Store Management team when assistance is required with any of the above department maintenance
Product Standards and Quality Assurance
• Know, understand and uphold ingredient and quality standards of The Real Food Company
• Review all product ingredient lists for conformity to Company Standards.
• Taste all new products to ensure quality and familiarity.
• Participate in periodic reviews of Company’s product standards.
• Keep current with new products and trends.
Administration and Recordkeeping
• Accountable for accurate tracking and coding of invoices and transfers
• Accurate and timely submission of employee paperwork
• Insure that all record keeping and reporting procedures are adhered to.
• Monthly operations reviews with Store Manager: observations, problems, staffing needs, training and development of team members, development of existing programs and new opportunities; P & L and budget reviews.
Other Functions:
• Performs other duties assigned by Store Management team or Ownership.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum 3 years retail experience, buying experience preferred
• Commitment to customer service
• Working familiarity and a commitment to continued education in all aspects of natural foods retailing: product lines, merchandising, business and product trends
• Understanding of retail financial operations especially sales and margin
• Certification or good practices in safe food handling and sanitation
Ability to comprehend and assist in compliance with all regulations and policies governing operations, both from the Company and from Government agencies such as the DPH
• Familiarity with Word and Excel
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Ability to handle up to 50# cases, containers and bags
Standing for up to eight hours
Working in refrigerated areas
Repetitive tasks
