Job Title: Deli Counter Supervisor

Department: Deli

Reports to: Deli Department Manager, Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager

PURPOSE
Deli Counter Supervisor supports the Deli Department Manager implementing management decisions and goals. Deli Counter Supervisor primarily manages the counter staff, ensures the satisfaction of the customers, and the smooth running of the deli counter. They may also assist with maintenance, merchandising, display and product management programs. Deli Counter Supervisor should have a developing knowledge of trends and issues in the natural food industry, as well as financial understanding of performance, budgeting, and sales goals. The Deli Counter Supervisor provides courteous and efficient customer service, including packing and pricing choices, preparing samples and making sandwiches, salads, and coffee to order. Deli Counter Supervisor assists in maintaining the presentation of the deli department. Deli Counter Supervisor reflects the personality and character of the store, and personnel must be focused on projecting our genuine willingness to deliver what we promise in our mission statement. Deli Counter Supervisor has or gains familiarity with our prepared food department, including organic and local issues, seasonality and cooking/preparation methods.

JOB FUNCTIONS:
Essential:
Deli Counter
o Assists customers in a courteous manner, answers questions regarding products, offers samples
o Prepares or packages customer selections with proper pricing
o Maintains sampling trays, displays and merchandising, stocking and facing as needed.
o Exercises safe food handling skills and good equipment safety procedures (particularly knives).
o Maintains and supervises a clean and well organized department, including sweeping, mopping, dusting restocking supplies and cleaning.
o The Deli Counter Supervisor assists in the training of new staff and often acts as a coach in the daily development of staff performance, including scheduling deli department shifts, breaks, lunches, and cleaning tasks.
Merchandising and Sales Growth
o Assist in generating, hanging, or maintaining signage
o Assist in re-sets
o Stay abreast of products and industry trends. Maintain a good working knowledge of current products in all departments. Take special orders and pass along to department manager.
o Act as Fill-in/Substitute for buyers as needed
Staff Development
o Train, retrain and coach staff. Work with Deli Department Manager and Store Management to develop and refine training programs as needed.
o Enforce company policies and participate in the disciplinary process
o Work to promote enthusiasm and teamwork among staff.

o Participate in the review process.
Other Operations
o Maintain fixtures, equipment and the physical plant
o Develop and maintain systems for organization of equipment
o Perform health and safety inspections and hazard evaluations
o Know and train in emergency procedures and security on the sales floor
o Performs other duties assigned by Store Manager or Supervisor.



PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
• Ability to safely handle up to #50 lbs cases, containers, and bags
• Standing for up to eight hours
• Job involves repetitive tasks
• Exposure to food ingredients and cleaning agents

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Minimum, one year of retail deli experience, Management or supervisory experience preferred
• Commitment to customer service
• Working familiarity and a commitment to continued education in all aspects of natural foods retailing: product lines, merchandising, business and product trends
• Ability to teach and comply with good safety practices for necessary equipment
