<p><strong>Who We Are</strong></p>
<p>Teach Western Mass is approved as a sponsoring organization by the Massachusetts DESE, which authorizes us to train and certify new teachers in the region through the Teach Western Mass Residency. The Teach Western Mass Residency provides talented new teachers for the Western Massachusetts region. The program's rigorous training program &ndash; beginning with an intensive summer pre-practicum experience and culminating in state certification &ndash; prepares people without prior education coursework to be effective in high-needs school environments. Following the inaugural pre-practicum, 100% of the first Residency cohort who successfully completed the summer pre-practicum were placed into local classrooms, serving hundreds of students for the 2018-2019 school year.</p>
<p>Heading into our second year, we continue to hold high expectations for teacher quality and work to ensure that only teachers who prove their ability to raise student achievement enter and remain in the classroom. We are currently authorized to certify new ESL and Moderate Disabilities teachers and are seeking authorization for Mathematics during our second year.</p>

<p><strong>Program Overview</strong></p>
<p>The Teach Western Mass Residency is a one-year accelerated program that gives aspiring teachers the chance to lead a classroom while getting significant support and earning certification. Our customized credentialing program trains new teachers to be effective in the classroom while building strong relationships in their school communities and implementing standards-based and culturally relevant curriculum for students in the region&rsquo;s highest-need schools and subject areas.</p>
<p>Together we&rsquo;re building a pipeline of dedicated and diverse educators who reflect the makeup of our vibrant region. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Teach Western Mass Residents will spend a year developing foundational teaching techniques in an actual classroom with personalized training and expert coaches to guide them along the way.</p>
<p><strong>PRACTICE</strong>&nbsp;- Master essential teaching skills while leading your own classroom full-time.</p>
<p><strong>COACHING</strong>&nbsp;- Learn how to succeed in Western Mass schools with guidance from an expert coach.</p>
<p><strong>COMMUNITY</strong>&nbsp;- Join a cohort of inspiring educators on a journey to a new career in the classroom.</p>
<p><strong>Who We Want</strong><br />We are looking for accomplished individuals who possess the skills and deep content knowledge to teach critical subjects where great teachers are often in short supply. Teach Western Mass Residents are accomplished professionals and recent graduates who commit to becoming exceptional teachers in high-need content areas.</p>
<p>Given our specific needs, we are particularly interested in candidates with the dedication and knowledge required to educate students in Middle School Mathematics, Special Education- Moderate Disabilities, and English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom settings.</p>
<p><strong>Benefits of the Teach Western Mass Residency</strong></p>
<p><strong>Focused, Classroom-Centered Training:</strong>&nbsp;Our training is unique and focuses on skills that are integral to success as a first-year teacher. We place a focus on essential teaching skills, content-specific strategies, and intensive coaching coupled with high-quality feedback. Our innovative training is centered around practicing instructional skills instead of just learning about them.</p>
<p><strong>Certification that Counts:&nbsp;</strong>Upon completing required MTELs and graduating our program, Residents will be on track to earn an Initial License from the state of Massachusetts.</p>
<p><strong>Full Salary and Benefits:&nbsp;</strong>Residents will begin earning a full teacher&rsquo;s salary, starting around $45,000 (could vary depending on the school&rsquo;s career ladder), plus comprehensive benefits, while pursuing certification when they start working full-time at a district or charter school in Fall 2019.</p>
<p><strong>Opportunities for Advancement:&nbsp;</strong>&nbsp;After completing the residency, exemplary teachers will have opportunities to earn higher compensation by taking on unique leadership roles and additional duties.</p>

<li>Ability to receive passing scores on all of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure required by your subject area</li>

About Us

Here in Western Massachusetts, we’ve been working hard to improve our schools—but we need to do even more to ensure that all our students get the world-class education they deserve. Though Massachusetts leads the nation in overall student performance, too many students are not getting the level of education they're entitled to. Teach Western Mass is bolstering the efforts of our hard-working educators by attracting more colleagues who are committed to becoming partners in change.

Our vision is that every classroom has an effective educator so that all students in Western Massachusetts have access to a vibrant education that will prepare them for college and career.

Teach Western Mass is a partnership founded by Holyoke Public Schools, the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership, and UP Education Network, with support from the Irene E. and George A. Davis Family Foundation and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Additionally, we're joined by several local charter schools.

Collectively, we represent 30 schools serving more than 11,000 students in Western Massachusetts.
