APEX Piping Systems is recognized as the leader in process pipe and specialty metal fabrications, including ASME Code work. Apex Piping Systems serves the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, pulp and paper, power, and marine industries. We are a “World Class” fabricator offering a superior product line including Jacketed Piping Systems, Pipe Coils, Skid Mounted Modular Process Systems, and ASME Code Pressure Vessels. In addition, we provide experienced mechanical, boiler maintenance and repair services. We are currently hiring Pipe Welders for our Mechanical Services Division.

POSITION SUMMARY: Use hand-welding and flame-cutting equipment to cut, fit and weld or join metal components including structural steel, pipes, and sheet metal.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Safety

  • You are responsible for your safety!
  • Work safely in accordance with the APEX Safety Management System and adhere to all Company rules and regulations.
  • Immediately report any unsafe conditions, injuries, illness and near misses or acts to a supervisor.
  • Review and understand JSA, permits, site conditions and job hazards prior to starting any work and check that the work to be performed is safe. If work appears unsafe, report to supervisor and do not proceed until conditions are safe.
  • Review and understand the job and be physically and mentally fit to perform the job.
  • Attend and actively participate in all safety meetings as required including daily toolbox meetings and skill training.

Pipe Welding

  • Broad knowledge and experience working in industrial petro/chemical and commercial environments.
  • Interpret blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, horizontal, and overhead positions.
  • Ignites torches and start power supplies and strikes arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating parts, warping, shrinking, distortion, and expansion of materials.
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformity with specifications.
  • Set up and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment, hand grinders, and portable saws.
  • Observe tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Inspect grooves, angles, and gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Remove rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinders, hand files, and scrapers.

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Education or Equivalent.
  • Certification(s) from Trade School pipe welding or ability to pass similar skills assessment testing
  • Ability to pass weld tests in accordance with ASME Section IX.
  • At least five years experience working in pipe welding or in a pipe welding apprenticeship in the petrochemical or industrial enterprises.
  • Ability to work alone or in a team environment and to follow directions and or instructions.
  • Good communication and problem solving skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to exert physical force
  • Able to talk and hear and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel.
  • Able to frequently to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Must be able to work with and must use PPE such as personal fall protection, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, welding hoods, gloves, hard hats, steel tip shoes and respirators when required by the job or site.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job typically requires work in industrial and commercial petro-chemical plants, refineries, terminals, power houses, mechanical rooms. Working conditions may be hot or cold and require movement in cramped spaces, climbing, crawling, stooping, and reaching. Must handle oil, grease, and sharp pieces of metal and heavy objects.
