Responsibilities and Duties

Responsibilities:

Perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties and often work chairside as dentists examine and treat patients.

Make patients as comfortable as possible in the dental chair, prepare them for treatment, and obtain their dental records.

Hand instruments and materials to dentists and keep patients’ mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices.

Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, prepare trays of instruments for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care.

Prepare materials for impressions and restorations, take dental x-rays, and process x-ray film as directed by the dentist.

Schedule appointments and order dental supplies and materials.

Essential Functions:

The following are indicative of the essential functions required to perform this job successfully. Other duties may be assigned by management.

1. Treatment

  • See that room set-up is complete for treatment type prior to bringing patient back
  • Have chart pulled up on computer with x-rays/HIPPA view
  • Verify signed treatment plan in chart
  • Verify patient paid for estimated portion
  • Verify all consent forms for treatment have been signed
  • Check health history for health condition/allergies
  • Greet patient by name, introduce themselves
  • Complete all routing forms
  • Seat patient in operatory
  • Confirm treatment scheduled for that day with patient
  • Assist dentist with treatment
  • Enter clinical notes in patient chart
  • Enter completed treatment for day
  • Go over post-op care with patient per treatment/answer questions
  • Confirm patient has appointments for next treatment or recall appointment if treatment has been completed. Always schedule the next available appointment for the patient’s provider.
  • Give patient “Care Enough To Share” card
  • Walk patient out and complete lab work
  • Recall/New Patients
  • See that room set up is complete for recall/hygiene type prior to bringing back patient
  • Verify patient paid for the day’s estimated treatment
  • Verify all consent forms have been signed/financial policy in place
  • Check health history for health condition/allergies
  • Change status in computer
  • Pick up route slip from receptionist
  • Greet patient by name, introduce themselves
  • Seat patient in operatory
  • Confirm treatment scheduled that day with patient
  • Take xrays/Prophy/Flouride
  • Assist dentist with exam/chart pre-existing/new treatment
  • Present treatment plan under $2000 to patient
  • Sterilize operatory, take tray and necessary instruments to sterilization area
  • Sterilization
  • Break down tray
  • Scrub instruments, place in ultrasonic
  • Bag and run any instruments/hand-pieces needing sterilization
  • Set-up trays
  • Keep area clean at all times
  • Care Calls
  • Filling Schedule
  • Make sure your cleaning responsibility is complete before leaving for day
  • COMPLETELY stock operatory before leaving
  • Check basket for items to be handled

Qualifications and Skills

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from a Dental Assistant Training Program
  • Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Current certification in radiology
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the organization, functions, responsibilities, and procedures

of dental facilities.

  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to use personal computers and related software.
  • Considerable interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective

working relationships with others.
